Per the Indiana Democratic Party, those applying to be delegates to the DNC must file with the Indiana Democratic Party between April 19 and May 20, 2024.
Running for National Delegate:
National delegates will be selected by state convention delegates at the Indiana Democratic Party’s 2024 State Convention in 2024.
Democratic primary voters will elect State Convention Delegates during the 2024 Democratic primary or will be appointed by the Chair.
The Indiana Democratic Party's Delegate Plan encourages new voters, and those from underrepresented groups to get involved in the delegate selection process. Voters of Color, women, and youth make up large segments of the Democratic Party, and work by the State Party Affirmative Action Committee on the plan ensures that these groups will be in Chicago representing Indiana.
Indiana will have 76 total delegates, and 6 at-large alternates, to the DNC. 44 of these delegates will be allocated via each of Indiana’s nine congressional districts. The district-level delegates will then meet at the state convention to select the nine Party Leader/Elected Official (PLEO) delegates, 14 at-large delegates, and six alternate at-large delegates.
Running for State Delegate:
2024 brings a lot of opportunities to get involved, including, running for state delegate to the Indiana Democratic Party Convention in June of 2024. MCDP will elect AT LARGE for our 2024 IDP Convention Delegates in Monroe County.
In the past, MCDP has allotted delegates by county council district. This has ended with the chair appointing and backfilling the slate. As in the past, MCDP will ask delegates to help defray the cost of the state party’s levy against our county - usually in the range of $3000 - to send our delegation.
However, we will not exclude delegates who cannot make a contribution. Consider giving to your MCDP on the regular to help us meet the mission and set us up for success in 2024.
Filing Requirements
Filing Requirements for Democratic State Convention Delegates Elected at the Primary Election:
Candidates for Democratic state convention delegate will be elected at the primary election to be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
A candidate for Democratic state convention delegate must file a declaration of candidacy (CAN-37) with the county election board. (IC 3-8-2-6) Democratic candidates running for state convention delegate are not required to submit the Statement of Economic Interests (CAN-12).
Since state convention delegates are “political offices,” an individual may run for elected office (for example, County Assessor, Township Board) and also run for precinct committeeman or state convention delegate. This would not be considered a violation of the state constitution’s ban on dual lucrative office holding. A person may run for state convention delegate and hold both political offices simultaneously without violating the state constitution’s ban on dual lucrative officeholding. Finally, state convention delegates are not subject to the state’s Campaign Finance Act.
The first day to submit a declaration of candidacy to the county election board is Wednesday, January 10, 2024, and the DEADLINE to file is 12:00 noon, prevailing local time, Friday, February 9, 2024. (IC 3-8-2-4; IC 3-8-2-5) A declaration of candidacy presented after February 9, 2024, at 12:00 noon, prevailing local time, will not be accepted for filing. The declaration of candidacy (CAN-37) is available from the Election Division’s office and can be downloaded from the Division’s website at in.gov/sos/elections
